As API production and consumption grows and matures it is becoming harder and harder to predict what your APIs may be used to support in the future. Initially a customer API may be built to allow customers to access and manage their information, but what happens when that same API is used for new purposes – for example offshore support? Can you be certain that the new use of your customer API is compliant with data protection regulations like GDPR, HIPAA or SchremsII? APIs should be designed for re-use, but how can they be safely re-used if the data they carry can’t easily adapt to new use cases and regulatory compliance?
